User Defined Fields
User defined fields are found in the LMS under the "User Field Configuration" page in the portal.
1. Select “System” in the admin toolbar.
2. Select menu button “User Field Configuration”.
3. On the New Page, select the "Data Fields" tab.
At the bottom of this page, the LMS provides admins with 20 empty fields in Pro and 10 in LE called "User Defined Fields." These are empty fields on a user's account that can be populated based on the registration needs.
An LMS admin can repurpose one of these user defined fields to be different expressions as needed. To do this, click on the edit pencil next to the user defined field that you want to utilize and type in your preferred text. There are three sections headers “Admin View”, “User View”, and “Reg. Form”.
Each of these headers have their own "View" and "Modify" ability to be selected as on or off for the view that the user will see on the form. Select the "View" and "Modify" checkboxes for all users that you want to interact with in this field on the form as they register. The “View” and “Modify” feature enables the LMS admin to give each view who can see this field and who can also modify the user defined field. This indicates that both users and admins can edit this field if selected on. You can even make this a required field with the checkbox on the far right-hand side:
To take this one step further, select the edit pencil on the far right-hand side of the field (as shown in the screenshot above).
Here you can select if this data field is a drop-down list, free text field, checkbox, etc. Remember if you do a text field the user will need to spell the word correctly if this places them into a group.
A Real World Example
An LMS admin can repurpose one of these user defined fields to say something like "Opt-In for Newsletter." Now on the registration form a user can opt-in to a newsletter when they sign up/create a new account in the system.
This will allow the LMS admin to further customize how users input data into this field during the registration process. The following video tutorial on our support site will explain the user field configuration settings in further detail and may clarify this setup process:
